In Secondhand Computer Market, Brand Names are still Important

Whether its cars, watches or computers, the quality behind an established brand extends from new items to used ones.
That's why, all other things being equal, you're better offbuying a business-grade Dell, HP or Lenovo PC than an unbranded "whitebox" unit assembled by a discount supplier.

Going Refurbished Can Keep Your Operating Systems Consistent For Years

Making sure that software is properly set up—with the right licensing—is one of the top concerns of school technology coordinators. And that's why buying from a large refurbisher such as CDI, North America's leading supplier of secondhand computer equipment for the education market, can eliminate a lot of headaches.

Get More Technology for Your Money with Refurbished Computers

By George Moore & Brian Bray 04/2010

Tight budgets are convincing many K12 districts to turn to certified refurbished computers as a way to stretch technology budgets. But secondhand computers, and the vendors who sell them, aren't all the same. Our Web seminar panelists, George Moore of Responsive Education Solutions in Texas and Brian Bray, of Lebanon Community Schools in Oregon, offer insights and advice based on their experiences buying refurbished computers.

Secondhand Is First-Rate

By Jennifer Demski 04/01/2010

Don’t be deterred by the stigma of buying used. Refurbished computers can offer better value and performance than new units, while lessening IT’s environmental footprint.
Consider this: Before you press the power button on a brand-new computer for the first time, it has already used almost 80 percent of the energy it will consume over its lifetime.

CDI and Numonics Form Partnership

“More than ever, districts understand the need to implement a cost effective, holistic strategy to tackle the technology challenges they face. We provided 250,000 units to schools in North America last year and many of our customers asked us for help in getting cost effective interactive whiteboards and projectors into their classrooms,” said Saar Pikar, General Manager, CDI. “We looked at a number of interactive whiteboards and realized that while many solutions existed in the market few of them covered all the needs of our educators and came in at a reasonable price point. Numonics boards are sold at the best price point in the business, are sturdy, made in the US, and come with the industry’s best warranty and no questions asked customer support. All of these things convinced me that Numonics is the company we wanted to partner with.”

Cutting Technology Costs with Refurbished Computers

By Alan Dessoff / 01/2010

Many district administrators are finding that they can save money on computers by buying preowned ones instead of new ones. The practice has other benefits as well: It allows districts to give more computers to more students who need them, and it also promotes good environmental practices by keeping the machines out of landfills, where they otherwise might wind up.

Most schools would like to buy PCs for all of their students; Rylie Family Faith Academies found a cost-effective way to do so.

When Greg Young, technology director at the Dallas, Texas-area Rylie Family Faith Academies, began working at the school, he had an enormous challenge. He had to figure out how to buy enough computers to serve every student.

“All of our PCs needed to be updated since the state mandated online testing for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) state test,” says Young. “Although it doesn’t go into place for a few years, we had to get ready for that.”
